Pork tenderloin takes well to so many different flavors and is quick and easy to make. We were inspired to pair pork with plums because the delicious stone fruit was starting to reappear at our local market.

When we were testing and photographing this recipe, we ended up making this dish three times over the course of a week. And we weren’t upset about it. It’s a sticky, savory, sweet dish that is almost shocking in its deliciousness.

Ingredients

Most of the flavorful ingredients in this dish could be considered Asian in nature: ginger, five spice powder, hoisin sauce. There is one ingredient that is not like the others: red wine. But this odd man out adds sweetness and depth that you can’t get anywhere else.

You’re going to want to lick the plate to make sure you don’t leave one drop of hoisin plum sauce behind. What kind of plums should you use? Well, that’s up to you. When we made it with plums that were a little unripe, it was tarter. When we made it with plums that were a little past their peak, it was sweeter and more luscious. We love that this recipe is adaptable to whatever you can find or have on hand.

Recipe tips

Our 5 spice pork with hoisin plum sauce is another simple recipe. We just have a few notes on timing to help you out.

  • After seasoning the raw pork, you should let it rest and un-chill for 10 minutes. During this time, you can prep your garlic, ginger, onions, and plums.
  • The sauce takes 20 minutes. For the first 10 minutes of that time, the pork will be in the oven; for the second 10 minutes the pork will be resting. It works out perfectly and deliciously.
